THis is axactly hoçw it should be : cavalery should not be able to disengage and charge on demand, this is unrealistic arcade game stuff.

Magnar was pulling back some medium cav just after a charge and you could see the cav's morale falling briefly before they were able to reorganise themselves and charge again. But in a Vae Victis's let's play video I saw something similar. But it was just making the tactics more complex. In the end, the result was as wanted since your unit was out of melee and taking its place behind. And because of the toggable guard mode, the unit which was facing the retreating unit was sometimes chasing it which could sometimes make the front line collapse. EB is very good for that since routing troops can rally by themselves and come back in line fast, it was creating a very realistic dynamic where you would see some troops loosing ground and briefly routing if they were pulled back at a wrong time. If it's elite troops it won't change anything anyway. I don't know about casualties, but the moral of a unit should be challenged a bit when pulled back. Of course you want to have a reserve unit take the place of the first one : I understand how in theory it should work perfectly especially if combined with quincunx formation. And Attila is in the end of the empire, quality of troops have declined a lot : in his "The secret history" Procope mention how during the Justinian wars, in his vbattle speech, a Sassanid general reminds to his soldiers that the romans are usuallly very disorganised once the battle starts. Maybe not with elite profesionnal troops used to fight in formation like the republican or early empire roman army but even then if the ennemy is pushing strong there is a risk.
